Mission
Cardiovascular disease in Aroostook County, Maine, the most northeastern county in the nation, is of epic, notable, national significance. Cardiovascular disease hospitalization rates and deaths are highest in the state, and among the highest nationwide, far exceeding the federal government's Healthy People 2010 objectives. There is an urgent need to be addressed. Our project proposes a major initiative for prevention and reduction of cardiovascular disease through introduction and reinforcement of significant lifestyle modifications.
The "Eat To Live" plant-based diet and the "Healthy Hearts Club" have been introduced to the community through the media, especially TV, community events, and incentives to help improve physical activity and optimal nutrition, and ultimately, the cardiovascular disease status of our culture. Through intensive education about cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, and offering practical lifestyle modifications with incentives and rewards, new demand has been created for healthy foods and use of existing recreational resources for physical activity.
Local farms, restaurants and grocery stores have been enlisted and equipped to service new demand for healthier foods. It is our goal that acceptance and adoption of new lifestyle standards will continue to become integrated into the community for improved quality of life. Our program model is subject to rigorous, ongoing evaluation, with the goal of being replicable for other high-risk communities.
